What is rosacea?
Unfortunately, the cause of rosacea is unknown, though it appears to be genetic. Research is making connections with the vascular and nervous systems as well.
A chronic, inflammatory condition, rosacea is more common in people of English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Scandinavian, and Eastern European descent and it rarely shows up before the age of 30. Rosacea gradually develops as a flush or acne attack, so most people don’t even know they have it. As it progresses, it becomes more aggressive with the redness deepening, often manifesting as red, visible blood vessels and pimples.
If left untreated, the inflammatory response occurs repeatedly which results in swelling, permanently dilated blood vessels, and bumpy, even bulbous skin (particularly over the nose), with rough, dry patches and pimples.
